RESEARCH FORUM FOR BAETS MEMBERS

BAETS is committed to support and encourage research work undertaken by younger members with an interest in this sub-specialty and to publicise the work of the more senior members who have a constant contribution to this field.

BAETS research grants

BAETS executive has decided to award a research grant of up to £5000 to support work undertaken on a topic related to endocrine surgery. It is expected that the results generated from such work will be presented at the BAETS meetings.

The winner of the 2010 grant is Mr S Balasubramanian from the University of Sheffield who will undertake a project entitled Intra-operative Near Infra-red Fluorescence Imaging in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery . Data derived from this work are expected to be presented at the 2012 BAETS national meeting.

Deadline for application for 2011 grant is 1 December 2011. Please use this form for your application.

BAETS Travelling Fellowship - deadline 15 June 2011

The BAETS' National Executive Committee has decided to reinstate the travelling fellowship. This will provide up to £1000 to trainees and Consultants in the first 3 years after their appointment. The application will include:

  • Not more than 4-page CV
  • application form (click here)
  • letter of acceptance from the unit due to be visited
  • NON-BAETS members need a letter of support from an active BAETS member.

Applicants may be required to attend for interview. The successful candidate will be required to write a report on their visit to be published in the BAETS Newsletter and present at the first BAETS meeting after they return from their travels.

BAETS publications

A list of papers published by BAETS members since 2007 has been compiled (download page).

In the future members should send me details of their publications so that I avoid missing any such contributions. This list will be updated every 3-6 months.

Registry of joint research projects undertaken by BAETS members

Projects for which it would be beneficial to gain the support of colleagues from other centres will be posted here. If you have patients that could be enrolled in such studies please contact the lead investigators.

Registry of research projects undertaken in individual centres by BAETS members

Trainees willing to be involved in research need to be aware of what type of work is undertaken in different units around the country. A registry of work-in-progress could provide such information and might encourage collaborations between centres.

If you are interested to make such information easily available to other members and trainees please email me the details and I will compile a list before the next BAETS meeting.

Registries of rare diseases

The European Association of Endocrine Surgeons (ESES) is currently exploring the possibility of setting up a registry of rare diseases. This will benefit of EU financial support and will aim to collect data on several topics (e.g. adrenal cancer, MEN, medullary thyroid cancer). Further information will be posted here once the application process progresses.

For any queries about these new projects please email me at radumihai@doctors.org.uk

Thank you for your support !

Radu Mihai,

Director of Research, BAETS Executive
